ACC Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Galveston College
Alvin Community College started conference play with a 1-2 record after losing 6-1 on Thursday and splitting the Saturday doubleheader against the Galveston College Whitecaps, dropping the second game of the series 8-6 (F7), and winning the third and final game by a score of 5-2.
Galveston College got on the board in the second inning after Trenton Buckley doubled, scoring Ethan Hughes. The Dolphins took the lead in the bottom of the second when Hayden Carpenter hit a two run homer to left, to give Dolphins the upper hand, 2-1.
Saul Soto's RBI single down the right field line allowed the Whitecaps to tie the game at two in the top of the third. A solo home run to left field by Nayden Ramirez gave ACC a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third. Ethan Hughes' solo homer to straightaway center field, tied the game at four apiece in the top of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, Galveston College Whitecaps broke up the tie when Austin Ryan induced a Nic Paparella RBI ground out. A double by Soto followed to extend the Whitecaps lead to 7-4. ACC would inch closer with runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, but would ultimately fall short, losing 8-6 in game one of the doubleheader. Matthew Foley earned the win for Galveston College. The hurler allowed one hit and zero runs over one inning, striking out two and walking two. Tyler Ryden took the loss for the Dolphins. The righty went five innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on six hits, striking out six and walking one. Bennett Springer started on the mound for Galveston College Whitecaps, surrendering five hits and four runs over four and one-third innings, striking out two and walking one. Tanner Marek led the Dolphins with three runs batted in. Nayden Ramirez and Hayden Carpenter both homered in the loss.
In Game two of the doubleheader, Galveston College were the first to get on the board in the fourth inning when Saul Soto grounded out, scoring Zac Daigre. In the bottom of the fourth inning, ACC took the lead after Caden Miller's RBI double down the left field line, Marco Villanueva's RBI double that bounced off the center fielder, Joe Mancinas' RBI single and Alex Guejardo's RBI double had ACC on top 4-1 through four innings. Galveston would inch closer with an RBI single from Grant Mathieu to make it 4-2 in the top of the fifth. ACC would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Guejardo singled in Villanueve. Carlos Garza earned the win for ACC, allowing three hits and two runs over six innings, striking out six and walking two. Lucas Moore took the loss for Galveston College, lasting four innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking one. Drew Maust collected the save for the Dolphins. ACC racked up 14 hits in the game. Mancinas, Guejardo, and Miller each collected three hits for the Dolphins.
ACC will take on Wharton County Junior College in a four game series starting on Wednesday, March 5th at Wharton, with the Dolphins having a home game on Thursday, before heading back to Wharton for a doubleheader on Saturday.
